Week 13
School Reinforces Inequality
Talking about social inequality in school, it reminds me of the Conflict theory proposed by Marx Weber, a 19th-century political philosopher. Conflict theorists believe education plays a negative role in society. Instead of reducing social inequality, conflict theorists believe education maintains social inequality as it forces students to accept their lower status in society. Education only helps the middle and upper classes by making the rich richer. This situation undoubtedly affects the motivation of students from lower class to excel in their studies because they are disadvantaged in many ways. Not only that, students from lower-class often associated with low academic achievement. and as a result, after graduating from school, these students are often offered for lower hierarchy jobs. Meanwhile, children from rich families who have access to many privileges such as access to the best education) normally score high academic grades and be the ones who secure better jobs. It shows that education is not everyone, it is only for those who can afford it. No matter how great the academic ability or desire to learn that students from lower social classes have, they could not afford the same privileges and opportunities as students from middle and upper classes.
